A bottomless portafilter, also called a naked portafilter, is an espresso portafilter without a spout underneath the basket.
By removing the bottom section, the espresso stream becomes visible during extraction.
This allows users to observe:
Unlike traditional portafilters that hide the bottom of the basket, bottomless portafilters provide direct visual feedback.
A bottomless portafilter works by allowing espresso to flow directly from the basket into the cup.

This visibility helps baristas improve:
A bottomless portafilter is not automatically better for every user.
Its main advantage is visibility.
It helps users understand: Grind quality, Distribution consistency, Tamping results
For beginners, it can reveal mistakes.
For experienced users, it provides more control over espresso refinement.
A bottomless portafilter does not directly improve coffee flavor by itself. It helps users identify preparation issues and improve espresso technique. Optimal extraction yields optimal flavor.
Spraying usually occurs because of uneven puck preparation, channeling, incorrect grind size, or inconsistent distribution.
They are two names for the same type of espresso portafilter.

A bottomless portafilter is the ultimate extraction diagnostic tool. It allows you to visually monitor the espresso flow in real-time to instantly identify channeling, spurting, or uneven flow distribution. Additionally, removing the bottom spouts provides more vertical clearance for fitting a coffee scale and larger cups underneath.
The portafilter itself is not defective; spraying is a clear symptom of channeling inside the coffee puck. This means the pressurized water has found cracks or low-density pockets in the coffee grounds. To fix this, optimize your puck prep: use a WDT tool to de-clump, ensure your tamping is perfectly level, or try a slightly finer grind size.
You cannot choose a portafilter based on brand name alone. You must verify three core specifications:
Daily Clean: After every extraction, knock out the puck and rinse the portafilter and basket thoroughly under hot water.
Deep Clean: Periodically remove the filter basket and soak the metal part of the portafilter in hot water mixed with an espresso machine cleaner (like Cafiza) to dissolve stubborn coffee oils.
Handle Care: Never submerge a natural wooden handle in water or put it in the dishwasher. Wipe the handle with a damp cloth and apply food-safe wood conditioner occasionally to prevent cracking.
