Why Choose IKAPE 58mm to 32mm Step-Down Portafilter Basket ?
Traditional 58mm baskets, used with 58mm espresso machine brew heads, require a finer grind for the same 18g of coffee grounds to achieve a stable 9 bar extraction pressure. This can increase extraction yield and provide a more balanced flavor, but it can also easily extract bitter substances and off-flavors.
With a step-down portafilter basket , using the same 18 grams of coffee beans, or even less, the smaller basket diameter results in a thicker coffee puck, requiring a coarser grind. This is conducive to extracting sweeter espresso, while reducing the sharp flavors in the coffee beans. Overall, the resulting espresso is sweeter, more aromatic, and has a smoother mouthfeel.
How the IKAPE Variable Diameter Basket Works
When the basket is deeper, the coffee puck is thicker, and the water flow through the coffee puck changes. The water pressure becomes more concentrated, the water flow resistance increases, and the extraction slows down. This results in longer contact time between the coffee grounds and water, leading to more uniform extraction. Simultaneously, channeling is reduced, and the consistency of the espresso is higher.
IKAPE Convex Basket 58mm to 32mm
The IKAPE 58mm to 32mm convex basketr portafilter basket is manufactured using CNC integrated molding, resulting in a conical and trapezoidal shape that creates a tighter pressure space. The deeper depth allows for thorough pre-infusion during the pre-infusion stage.
The 18-gram Espresso Basket Sits Flush with Bottom of the Portafilter
The IKAPE reducer basket is compatible with all 58mm portafilters and sits flush with the bottom of the portafilter, without a protruding tail. It is compatible with all portafilter holders and coffee tamper stations
Espresso Can Be Extracted Without Using Coffee Tamper for Pressing
Thanks to its tapered shape, the IKAPE variable diameter basket facilitates pressure build-up. Therefore, with the appropriate grind size, espresso can be extracted without using a coffee tamper. Of course, if a coffee tamper is desired, the grind size can be adjusted to be coarser, and the coffee grounds can be leveled with a distributor before tamping.
The complete process:
① Adjust grinder setting → Use WDT tool → Use distributor → Extract espresso
② Adjust grinder setting → Use WDT tool → Use distributor → Use coffee tamper → Extract espresso
In these processes, no additional accessories are needed; simply use your regular coffee tools.
The differences between the two 58mm convex-shaped baskets
58mm with height 33mm-Can hold 16-20g of coffee beans
58mm with height 38mm-Can hold 20-24g of coffee beans
Apart from that, all other features are the same.
Extraction Suggestions:
- For light roasts and very light roast pour-over coffee beans, a relatively coarser grind is needed for an over-extraction method. A finer grind will result in poor extraction.
- Medium-dark and dark roasts with a coarse grind yield a better sweetness, like Dove chocolate, with a smoother taste and more pronounced aroma.
- Regardless of the type of coffee beans used, the grind size needs to be coarser than that used with conventional baskets. If no espresso is extracted during the brewing process, please adjust the grind size to be even coarser.
